Before we dive into looking at the Halloween costumes, it’s important to address some safety issues.
Keeping Your Dog Safe at Halloween
Keep an Eye on Nervous Dogs
Halloween can be overwhelming, so if you have a nervous dog make sure that he or she isn’t going to get frightened by people running around in costumes, especially if there is a lot of extra noise and excitement. Ensure your dog’s bed or crate is a safe place for them to go and relax. You might even want to stuff a kong toy with some dog-safe treats to keep then occupied for a while. You know your dog best, so only let them deal with what they are able to.
Walk Your Dog Before Dark
Walk your dog before dark so you don’t run into a thousand excited children going door to door for treats. Even if your dog doesn’t get nervous usually, Halloween is a lot of extra sights, sounds and smells to take in, so it may leave your pup feeling tired and anxious.
Be Vigilant With Dog Costumes
When it comes to Halloween costumes you want to make sure that the outfit doesn’t rub, overheat your dog, or stop them doing normal doggy things. Always supervise your dog while they are wearing a costume and don’t leave them in it for very long. A dog Halloween costume is more about taking a nice photo of your dog and celebrating the day.
Some dogs will tolerate Halloween costumes for longer and may even enjoy wearing them – but again, you know your dog best. Never force a dog to wear a costume, if they aren’t up for it then leave them be. Be careful that your pup isn’t going to chew the costume and swallow any parts, that’s why supervision is so important. Also, never let dogs be around open flames, heaters, or anything that could be a fire hazard to your dog. This can be particularly dangerous when they are wearing a costume.
Watch What Your Dog Eats
Be very wary about what your dog is eating at Halloween. As we all know chocolate is deadly to dogs, and a lot of other human food can be dangerous. Head here for a more complete list of human foods dogs can and can’t eat.
Never Leave Your Dog Alone In the Garden/Yard
Dog thefts have been on the rise and Halloween could be the perfect time to nab a pup, as there are often plenty of people milling around. Also if you are going to be answering the door to lots of Trick or Treaters make sure your pup is secured in a room or crate so they can’t escape. Plus, always ensure your dog is microchipped.
